The 2004 Olympics may be history now, but with 989?s release of ATHENS 2004, players can relive all the triumphant moments of the game on their Playstation 2. The game features 24 different summer Olympic events ranging from gymnastics to shot put to horse racing. Multiplayer modes horse power tv and optional use of a dance controller round out the game. The game modes are fairly self-explanatory, with players opting either to complete in a single event or a series of events in a decathlon or heptathlon. Players can also build their own series of events, sending their created character into an unrelated series of competitions such as a swimming dash followed by a gymnastics floor routine. Party mode is one of the more unique features of ATHENS 2004. Designed to be played using a dance controller like those used for DANCE DANCE REVOLUTION, the mode harks back to the days of the Nintendo Power Pad. Players must literally run to reach the finish line. A four player multiplayer mode is also available for an Olympic-themed party. The game interface aims for a TV-broadcast feel, which it achieves easily. Different camera angles, instant replays, horse power tv and a commentator will make players feel like they?re watching an Olympic broadcast centered on them.
